Who to look forward to in 2012!

January 3, 2012, 9:00 am

Here are some artists to keep an eye on for the new year. ~Jason Miller

Artist: Lana Del Ray

If you haven't heard about this YouTube sensation yet, I'm sure you will.  Gaining popularity by releasing a couple of cryptic videos online, Del Ray has an undeniable air of mystery about her.  She looks like classic glamour mixed with Angelina Jolie's lips.  Her lyrics are choppy, and don't really create a full narrative.  But there's something about her.  You'll get to see for yourself on Saturday Night Live January 14th, and her first album, "Born to Die," comes out January 31st.  Watch this video and tell me you aren't fascinated.  I dare you.

Artist: Dr. Dog

These guys certainly aren't new, but they're worth keeping an eye on.  Dr. Dog's sound has bounced around ranging from indie to nostalgic.  Whatever the band's mood, the sound is always solid.  They have a new album coming out Feb. 7th called Be the Void, and just six short days later they will be playing to a bouncing crowd at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland.

Artist: Brandi Carlile

Ms. Carlile will be playing 2 highly anticipated shows in Portland in 2012.  The first is an intimate show at Mississippi Studios on January 4th (a make-good for her recent cancellation due to illness).  She'll be stopping by the Bing lounge before that performance, so watch the website for video/audio.  Her second show will be at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on May 4th with...wait for it... THE OREGON SYMPHONY!  Anyone that has heard her most recent release (Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony) knows exactly how great this show will be!

Artist: The Punch Brothers

You may recognize Chris Thile's name from his days with Nickel Creek.  His latest project is The Punch Brothers, and they'll be releasing their 3rd album "Who's Feeling Young Now?" on February 14th.  The sound is still bluegrass, but The Punch Brothers embody more of an outlaw flavor than Thile's previous projects.  The new album will feature a Radiohead cover, and 2 songs written by Josh Ritter.  They'll be playing a live show in Portland March 7th at the Wonder Ballroom.  Here they are performing with Steve Martin!
