We spoke with Alan Sprott, who is President of WORKING WATERFRONT COALITION, and VP at Vigor Industrial. Alan says we are at a unique crossroad. The harbor has been intentionally developed, and there’s been significant alteration of the natural habitat along that portion of the river. It’s been dredged and channelized in some areas. There was industrial development that required piers and wharves. But having said that, Alan says there’s a significant amount of undeveloped natural habitat that remains. LISTEN TO OUR CONVERSATION, BELOW.
THE RIVERS RUN THROUGH USThe Working Waterfront Coalition invites you to a must-see art exhibition and sale. Industry&Art: The Rivers Run Through Us is a uniquely beautiful glimpse into the people and industries of our working waterfront. Harbor industries contribute 40,000 jobs and over a billion dollars to our local economy. Industry&Art explores this dynamic, seldom-seen world through painting, sculpture, photography and more.
If you’ve never been to the shipyard prepare to be inspired. Nothing quite compares. The show is open Thursday Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 25. Saturday and Sunday are family friendly days with activities for kids and some exciting extra attractions. Take an exhilarating jet boat tour of the harbor. Board the fully restored steamer Portland, the last steam-powered, sternwheel tugboat to be built in the United States. Get up close to a World War II PT boat. There is even a raffle for a lifetime membership in Save the PT Boat which entitles the winner to rides at special events.
Industry&Art is presented by the Working Waterfront Coalition (WWC), an organization of industrial marine businesses concerned about the environmental health and continued economic vitality of the Portland Harbor. All proceeds from Industry&Art go to two initiatives critical to harbor businesses: Job training and the environment. Recipients are Portland Community College Foundation WWC Scholarship Fund and West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District
Industry&Art is sponsored by KINK.fm, Vigor Industrial and Gunderson with support from The Port of Portland, K&L Gates and Willamette Jetboat Excursions.
