KINK Music Discovery Pick of the Week

Artist: Mason Jennings

Album: Minnesota

Quick Review: Mason might just be my favorite singer/songwriter under 60.  I love that he’s not afraid to use his voice.  It flutters and jumps through his songs.  This is the first album that Mason wrote primarily on the piano instead of the guitar, so I was a little skeptical.

Personally, I prefer the acoustic guitar/harmonica Jennings a-la 2008’s “Boneclouds,” so this album wasn’t an instant hit with me.

The acoustic guitar is almost completely absent, replaced instead by the hollow-body electric that Mason fell in love with on his last release “Blood of Man.”  But like any great album, this one grew on me.  Ok, maybe I’m not ready to call it great yet... but I might be in a week or two.

Even Quicker Review: Solid effort that has a strong side two.

Favorite Songs: Rudy, Well of Love (Mason… what did you put in your coffee when you recorded this one? More please!), Wake Up, No Relief

Worth Buying?: You Betcha’

Coming to Portland: Saturday, October 15, 2100 – Wonder Ballroom w/ The Pines
