Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto

October 26, 2011, 9:01 am

Artist: Coldplay

Album: Mylo Xyloto

Quick Review: It's always been my humble opinion that Chris Martin has a screw loose somewhere. Maybe that's what keeps the rest of us from thinking on such a grand scale... we're wound too tight. Thinking big definitely seems to be a major influence on Coldplay's latest release. It's filled with arena rock anthems. Songs that evoke images of fog machines and laser light shows.

Despite the  grandiose nature of the album, I feel like songwriting is lost at times. As nice as it is to have songs as big as "Talk" from X & Y or "Paradise" from their new album, there are few glimpses of the stripped down sound that made songs like "The Scientist" or "Trouble" so incredible. That's not to say that there aren't sparse songs on the album, "U.F.O." and "Us Against the World" certainly fit the bill. I guess I'm just saying that they don't seem as inspired as "the other songs."

The band nails "the other songs," however. This album goes beyond X & Y and Viva La Vida in production value. Coldplay is exhibiting a wall of sound that Jeff Lynne would envy. The songs sound loud, even when played softly. It's quite a feat.

Even Quicker Review: If you like the louder, larger side of Coldplay, have I got an album for you!

Favorite Songs: Major Minus, Paradise, Charlie Brown

You should listen to this ______: on a boombox in the center of an empty Memorial Coliseum. I'm sure that would be awesome.

Coming to Portland: Well, not yet announced... but they've got to, right? RIGHT? ~ Jason Miller
