Congratulations to Illinois! They became the first state to ban the sale and manufacture of products containing microbeads, the synthetic exfoliants found in face wash, body soap and toothpaste. Environmentalists are concerned that the non-biodegradable beads are harming fish and other wildlife. Tests show a microbead presence in the great lakes. California, Minnesota, New York and Ohio are considering a ban of their own. In anticipation of the ban, companies are phasing out microbeads in their products. In the meantime, consider switching to products that don’t contain microbeads.
