Small and Big Ways to Keep Cool

There are smart ways to keep your house cooler without jacking up your energy bill. The little things you can do include drinking lots of water to cool your body temperature, draw your drapes, turn off unnecessary heat-producing devices, wash and dry your clothes when the day is cool, and clotheslines don’t generate any heat in the house. Skip your dishwasher’s dry cycle, turn off your furnace pilot light, keep heat-producers away from your thermostat. Small projects to keep your house cool include installing a ceiling fan, replace your air-conditioner filters and shade the unit, and check your weather stripping. If you want to make some big upgrades, consider your attic insulation and improve the ventilation up there. Plant deciduous trees on the west side of your house and replace older windows with new, energy efficient units.
